Calcium nitride

Magnesium reacts slowly at lower temperatures to give the amide, as do all active metals this reaction is catalyzed by transition metal ions. Aluminum nitride [24304-00-5] AIN, barium nitride [12047-79-9] Ba2N2, calcium nitride [12013-82-0] Ca2N2, strontium nitride [12033-82-8], Sr2N2, and titanium nitride [25583-20-4], TiN, may be formed by heating the corresponding amides. [Pg.338]

The purity of commercial-grade calcium depends to a large extent on the purity of the calcium oxide used in its production. Impurities such as magnesium oxide, or other alkaline-earth or alkaH metal compounds are reduced along with the calcium oxide, and these metals can contaminate the calcium. In addition, small amounts of aluminum may distill with the calcium vapor, and small amounts of calcium nitride may be produced by reaction with atmospheric nitrogen. [Pg.401]

A 5.025-g sample of calcium is burned in air to produce a mixture of two ionic compounds, calcium oxide and calcium nitride. Water is added to this mixture. It reacts with calcium oxide to form 4B32 g of calcium hydroxide. How many grams of calcium oxide are formed How many grams of calcium nitride ... [Pg.73]

Out of three phases reported for Ca3N2 [12], to date only the cubic (a) nitride phase is confirmed, crystallizing in the anti-bixbyite type structure. In addition, the carbodiimide nitride Ca4(CN2)N2 [13] may hold for another unconfirmed calcium nitride phase, and Can(CN2)2N6 stands for the ill-defined CauNg [14]. Here we note again that carbon impurities may produce significant difficulties in reactions. [Pg.126]

The reasoning which led the author to make this first shot in the dark regarding the usefulness of combinations of solid compounds as ammonia catalysts was as follows If we assume that a labile iron nitride is an interminate in the catalytic ammonia synthesis, every addition to the iron which favors the formation of the iron nitride ought to be of advantage. In other words, the hypothesis was used that surface catalysis acts via the formation of intermediate compounds between the catalyst and one or more of the reactants. An experimental support for this theory was the fact that a stepwise synthesis via the formation and successive hydrogen reduction of nitrides had been carried out with calcium nitrides (Haber), and cerium nitrides (Lipski). Later, the author found molybdenum nitride as being the best intermediate for such a stepwise synthesis. [Pg.87]

An unusual new synthesis method involves carrying out reactions in a molten salt medium, and has been used on an industrial scale for the production of metallic nitride, carbide or carbonitride powders.25 An illustration of this CEREX process is the preparation of oxygen-free titanium nitride in molten calcium chloride. The method involves the reaction between titanium tetrachloride and calcium nitride ... [Pg.144]

Alkaline earth-containing ternary nitrides make up the second largest group of ternary phases. Because the alkaline earth metals form stable binary nitrides, most alkaline earth containing ternary nitrides have been synthesized by the reaction of a binary nitride with a metal or by the reaction of two binary nitrides. This synthesis has resulted in a number of new ternary nitrides with a variety of structures. For example, the reaction of calcium nitride with Group 14 or 15 metals or metalloids forms a series of structurally related ternary nitrides with the anti-perovskite type structure. In Ca3MN (M = P, As, Sb, Bi, Ge, Sn, Pb) (Figure 8.5) the... [Pg.373]

CasN2 (c). For the heat of solution of calcium nitride, Moser and Herzner1 reported 261.6 and Guntz and Bassett1 2 reported 342.7. From measurement of the direct formation, Franck and Bodea1 reported Qf = 102.6. [Pg.346]
