A hot solution of 180 g (1.18 mol) of (S)-a-hydroxybenzeneacetic acid (mandelic acid) in 300 mL of acetone (distilled from calcium chloride) is added to a hot stirred solution of 180 g (1.15 mol) of rac-2- tcrt-buty 1 -3-methyl-4-imidazolidinone in 100 mL of acetone. After seeding and stirring, the solution is allowed to cool down very slowly to 4 °C by insulating the flask. The crystals formed are filtered off and suspended in 290 mL of acetone and stirred under reflux for 1 h. After cooling, filtering and redissolving in 170 mL of acetone as above, the crystals formed on cooling are collected to yield the (S)-imidazolidinone (S)-mande-late yield 108 g (30%) mp 115.5-116.5 °C [a]D +89 (c = 1, ethanol). [Pg.817]

A notable exception was a study by Mandel and Thompson [83] who found no consistent differences between the respective calcium and phosphorus levels in both parotid and submaxillary salivas from groups of calculus-formers and non-formers. However, a later analysis of a number of salivary components in heavy and light calculus-formers by Mandel [84], showed that... [Pg.15]

Methenamine and methenamine mandelate are only effective as urinary antisepties if the pH is about 5.5 or lower, when formaldehyde is released. This is normally achieved by giving urinary acidifiers such as ammonium chloride, ascorbic acid, or sodium acid phosphate. In the case of methenamine hippurate, the acidification of the urine is achieved by the presence of hippuric acid. The concurrent use of substances that raise the urinary pH such as acetazolamide, sodium bicarbonate, potassium or sodium citrate is clearly contraindicated. Potassium citrate mixture BPC has been shown to raise the pH by more than 1 at normal therapeutic doses, thereby making the urine sufficiently alkaline to interfere with the activation of methenamine to formaldehyde. Some antacids (containing magnesium, aluminium or calcium as well as sodium bicarbonate mentioned above) can also cause a significant rise in the pH of the urine. ... [Pg.318]
