Calcium magnesium phosphate

A 0-9% salt solution is considered to be isotonic with blood. Other electrolytes present include bicarbonate ions (HCOj ) and small amounts of potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphate, sulphate and organic acid ions. Mechanism of Action A nonabsorbable compound that alters urinary composition of calcium, magnesium, phosphate, and oxalate. Calcium binds to cellulose sodium phosphate, thus preventing intestinal absorption of it. Therapeutic Effect Prevents the formation of kidney stones. 

Not all of the salt constituents are found in the dissolved state in milk. Calcium, magnesium, phosphate, and citrate are partitioned between the solution phase and the colloidal casein micelles (see Chapter 9 for the composition and structure of these micelles). For analytical purposes, partition of the salt constituents can be achieved by equilibrium dialysis or by pressure ultrafiltration. In the latter technique, pressures must be limited to about 1 atmosphere to avoid the so-called sieving effect (pushing water through the filter faster than the dissolved components (Davies and White 1960). 

Fused Calcium Magnesium Phosphate. In a process developed by TVA, a mixture of phosphate rock and olivine or serpentine (magnesium silicate) is fused in an electric furnace.21 The molten product is quenched with water and used in a finely divided state as a fertilizer. The product, a calcium magnesium phosphate (CMP) glass, contains about 20 percent P205 and 15 percent MgO. Over 90 percent of the product is soluble in citric acid. 

Controlled-Release Phosphate Fertilizers. Several controlled-release phosphates have been produced commercially. Important among them are ground phosphate rock, basic slag, and fused calcium magnesium phosphate. These products have been discussed earlier.
