Calcium and zinc fluorides

Calcium fluoride has also been used in metathetical reactions. Usually, heat is required to promote reactions of this type. Booth and Dutton4 passed vapors of a volatile halide [phosphorus(V) oxychloride] over a bed of heated calcium fluoride to produce the chlorofluoride and fluoride derivatives. Sodium fluoride, potassium fluoride, titanium (IV) fluoride, and zinc fluoride have been used in similar metathetical fluorination reactions. 

Fluorides that are insoluble in water such as calcium fluoride Cap2, magnesium fluoride MgF2, barium fluoride BaF2 and zinc fluoride ZnF2 have no action on aluminium.

Molybdenum disulfide [1317-33-5] M0S2, may be used alone or in a complex compound formed by grinding with fine natural graphite, and zinc sulfide [1314-98-3] ZnS. Other compounds include calcium fluoride, cryoHte [15096-52-3] Na AlF, rare-earth oxides, and metal sulfides, eg, iron, antimony, or zinc (see LUBRICATION AND LUBRICANTS).

The progress of precipitation is revealed by the concentration/time curves for zinc and phosphate, since both these species are present initially in solution. There should be maxima for the soluble aluminium, calcium and fluoride which are extracted from the glass, but because of the early onset of precipitation these are not observed. Precipitation is accompanied by an increase in pH when it reaches 1-8, at which juncture 50% of both zinc and phosphate have been precipitated, the cement paste gels (5 minutes after preparation).

Calcium sulfate is formed as a byproduct in industrial processes such as flue gas desulfurization and the production of zinc, fluoride, organic acids and phosphoric acid, in amounts of many million tons per year.
