Butyns-1,4-diol

The same goes for butyne-1,4-diol, which is unstable, in particular in the presence of strong bases, metal halides or Hg (II) salts in a sulphuric medium. 

A Ag/Pd-cathode hydrogenates 2-butyne-1,4-diol and acetylene dicarboxylic acid exclusively to the cis-olefin [323]. Similar results were obtained at a Cu net covered with spongy silver [324]. With dimethyl butynedioate the cis/trans ratio of the product dimethyl butenedioate on a Pd black cathode decreased with increasing pH both in electrolytic and catalytic hydrogenation [325]. On the other side at a Hg cathode a trans addition to alkynes occurs [326]. In methy-lamine/liCl, dialkylacetylenes are reduced to trans-olefins. Nonconjugated aromatic internal acetylenes are selectively reduced to aromatic trans-olefins [327].

Taira hydrogenated 2-butyne-1,4-diol using Urushibara Fe as catalyst in ethanol at 80-100°C and an initial hydrogen pressure of 5-7 MPa until the hydrogen uptake ceased and obtained cw-2-butene-1,4-diol in 70-75% yield (eq. 4.29).89... 

Mixed ligand complexes of Pr(III) and Nd(III) with bipyridine/o-phenanthroline and diols (1,4-butane-, 1,4-butene-, 1,4-butyne-) in seminonaqueous media were studied with respect to 3H4 - 3P2, D2 transitions in Pr(III)and %/2 -> 4F5/2,4G7/2,4F7/2, and4F3/2 transitions of Nd(III). The diols form seven membered rings along with two Ln-N bonds through bipyridine/o-phenanthroline. The intensity of the 4f-4f bands varied in the order butyne-1,4-diol > butene-1,4-diol > butane-1,4-diol. 

A. 2,3-Bls(phenylsulflnyl)-1,3-butadiene. In a 2-L, three-necked, round-bottomed flask equipped with a mechanical stirrer, 25-mL dropping funnel, and a nitrogen inlet, are placed 7.75 g (0.09 mol) of 2-butyne-1,4-diol (Note 1), 37.6 ml. (0.27 mol) of triethylamine, and 700 mL of dichloromethane. After the diol is completely dissolved, the mixture is cooled to -78°C. To this solution is added 26.0 g (0.18 mol) of phenylsulfenyl chloride (Note 2) over a 30-min interval. The mixture is gradually warmed to room temperature and stirred for an additional 12 hr. The solution is then washed with 100 mL each of water, saturated ammonium chloride solution, saturated sodium bicarbonate solution, and brine, and dried over sodium sulfate. After filtration and concentration, the residue is recrystallized from methanol-ether (1 1) to give 20.1 g (74%) of 2,3-bis(phenylsulfinyl)-1,3-butadiene as a 1.1 1 mixture of diastereomers (Note 3). 

Butyne-1,4-diol, sodium hydride (60% in oil) and dimethyl malonate were purchased from Aldrich Chemical Company, Inc. and used without further purification. Triethylamine and dichloromethane were distilled from calcium hydride prior to use.
