Butyl 2,2-dimethylpropanoate

Amide derivatives of l-(2-methoxyphenyl)piperazine acids were also prepared by the author in the current invention. Other amide derivatives have been prepared using N-[4-[4-(2-methoxyphenyl)-l-piperazinyl]butyl]-2,2-dimethylpropanoic acid and are described (1).

In 2000, Ube Industries, Ltd. discovered tertiary carboxylic add esters, such as methyl 2,2-dimethylpropanoate (157), ethyl 2,2-dimelhylpropanoale (158), butyl 2,2-dimethylpropanoate (159), and hexyl 2,2-dimethylpropanoate (160) [35]. 

The lithium enolates of cyclopentanone and cyclohexanone undergo addition-elimination to the 2,2-dimethylpropanoic acid ester of ( )-2-nitro-2-hepten-l-ol to give 2-(l-butyl-2-nitro-2-propenyl)cycloalkanones with modest diastereoselection. An analogous reaction of the enolate ion of cyclohexanone with the 2,2-dimethylpropanoic acid ester of (Z)-2-nitro-3-phenyl-2-propenol to give 2-(2-nitro-l-phenyl-2-propenyl)cyclohexanones was also reported. The relative configuration of these products was not however determined6. 

Exercise 24-21 Show how 2-methyl-2-nitropropane may be synthesized from (a) tert-butyl alcohol and (b) 2,2-dimethylpropanoic acid. (Review Sections 23-12E and 24-3B if necessary.)... 

The tert-butyl group of ethyl 2,2-dimethylpropanoate causes more crowding than the methyl group of ethyl acetate the rate-determining intermediate is less stable and is formed more slowly.
