The approach taken by Naim et al. (2002) is a guide for performing a supply chain oriented business diagnostics called Quick Scan. (Juick Scan is the first step in identifying change management opportunities in the supply chain.

Chemical-based products cover a broad spectrum of materials and forms, ranging from molecules to appliances. Table 16.1-1 shows the various product functional forms, along with examples in major application areas. Examples highlighted in italic are those discussed in this book. Most small molecules such as BTX (benzene-toluene-xyxlene) are sold to chemical and allied products industries while a limited number such as refrigerants and solvents are for sale in the consumer market. In contrast, multicomponent liquid mixtures such as liquid shampoo, semi-solids such as cream and paste, and structured solids such as controlled release herbicide are often sold directly to the consumers. Business-to-consumer sale is even more prevalent for ready-to-use devices and appliances such as diagnostic kits, drinking water filters and air cleaners. 

The pharmaceuticals segment (SIC 283) consists of some 1,225 corporations whose primary business is the development, manufacturing, and marketing of medicinal chemicals and botanicals in vitro and other diagnostic substances to diagnose or monitor the state of human or veterinary health bacterial and virus vaccines. 

Du Pont s medical diagnostics and pharmaceutical businesses are underpinned by substantial basic research in molecular biology and biochemistry. For example, Du Pont recently announced an improved, more reliable test for detection of antibodies to the virus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. In another program the protein interleukin-2 produced in Du Pont s laboratories by recombinant DNA methods is being used in some very promising cancer research. 

SmithKline Beecham formed joint venture with Incyte to enter genetic diagnostics business. 

The number of biological processes has increased tremendously in the last 15 years. This has resulted in high expectation for an improvement of quality of life and an increase in the volume of business related to products obtained from animal cell culture technology, with the broad potential use of these products for disease diagnostics, prevention, therapy, and cure. Table 1.1 indicates some examples of approved therapeutic products obtained through animal cell culture.
