What is business development This is usually the first question I have to answer whenever I m asked what I do for a living by people outside the pharmaceutical industry. The answers I try to give are often tailored to the audience and what they are likely to quickly understand from their own experience. However, as few people have any idea that such a role exists beyond some hazy idea of marketing they usually smile politely and suddenly remember there is someone on the other side of the room to whom they must say hello immediately. So a definition of business development, at least as I have seen it performed since it comes in many different guises, will be useful. What is accomplished by adhesion promotion treatments in IC manufacturing should actually be referred to as wafer substrate preparation, and not adhesion. Adhesion in the structural sense, as experienced in airplane composite material parts attachment, is not accomplished by silane wafer processing treatments except for the PI applications discussed early in this paper. The term adhesion, as it is used here, refers to a more practical definition—that is, resist image adhesion. Nevertheless, this type of adhesion is essential to the huge international semiconductor business, and the early silane work of Plueddemann and others was essential to early wafer adhesion process development. [Pg.459]

As with other types of planning, the initial step of business planning is to define the business or service proposed. After exploring the business concept (see above), Ted likely already will have developed a clear idea of the business proposal. To formalize a definition of the business, he should develop a specific statement of the purpose of the program. This statement is also called a mission statement and was discussed in Chapter 3. The mission will crystallize the aims of the program and help to steer the direction taken in other steps of the planning process. [Pg.51]
