Figure 7.31 shows a bulkhead-style switching station which is frequently used where multiple lines are to be brought in from silos through a block or masonry wall. The unit consists of an inner and outer aluminum plate mounted over the wall opening. Tube stubs are welded to the inner plate which is fitted with female disconnect fittings. 

The complete cab consists of a shell, floor, and bulkhead together with various other fittings such as valence panels, doors, windows, desk, seats, and instrument console. The common error is to apply a large expansion at the discharge of the pump, such as from a 4" pump discharge to an 8" pipe. Doubling the diameter is effectively multiplying by four the area exposed to the fuU pressure, of which a quarter is absorbed by the pump, leaving three quarters to be balanced by a pipe fitting such as a properly supported dead end bulkhead, an anchor block, or, whenever possible, by soil friction, as is the case with pipeline pumps.
