This chapter moves from the process evaluation methods described in Chapter 23 to methods for process documentation. The need to document extends from as-is to redesigned to-be processes. Our introduction to the subject of processes in Chapter 22 asserted that processes, as building blocks of activities, contribute mightily to competitive position. While process management tools such as the Supply-Chain Council s SCOR, described in Chapter 23, will help, most companies have one-of-a-kind existing processes and unique requirements for future processes. 

Utilizes the concept of generic supply chain unit as the main building block of the simulation model. Section 9.4 defines the type of hybrid models and elaborates a meta-modeling based method for development of the hybrid models. The method allows for computationally efficient integration between the optimization and simulation models. An example illustrating the hybrid modeling is provided. 

It is therefore important that a total supply chain manag ent approach is applied and all the building blocks of the supply chain are examined. The synergy that results from the benefits contributed by all elements as a whole far exceeds the aggregate of benefits achieved for an individual elements. The integrated approach is truly more than the sum of its elements. If one concentrates exclusively on isolated areas, a false impression may be inevitable and inappropriate action taken. 

There is a visible absence of a dedicated chapter on systems and procedures in the published books on supply chain management. This building block of systems and procedures is covered in more detail in Chapter 17. 

The supply chain in the service sector will also need all the building blocks of the total supply chain although they should be used and managed differently depending on services. For example, in an insurance service industry the approach to inventory management would be different to that in an automobile...

Numerous effective measures of supply chain performance exist, but the best focus on (1) cycle time, which offers inventory reductions and capacity increases, (2) on-time performance to customer expectations, and (3) quality, which is the foundational building block of a satisfied customer base. 

In the competitive markets of today, positioning a company simultaneously in the domains of product, process, and supply chain is an imperative. However, the tradeoffs among the dimensions can be quite complex, as they are interdependent. The building blocks of a framework for such tradeoffs can be the product-architecture that maps the functions of a product to physical components and determines the configuration of product-variants. The framework must include tools for assessing attributes such as component commonality, product quality, technology, manufacturing processes, and postponement, as shown in Fig. 3.1. Thus, to obtain the optimal tradeoff, one may tweak the product architecture appropriately in view of the customer preferences. 

Processes are the fundamental building blocks of a company s operations, and both the understanding and improvement in processes determine their excellence. Processes transform inputs (actions, methods, and operations) into outputs. They are the steps by which value is added to satisfy the expectations of customers. The processes interact with other processes in the supply chain, as outputs from one process form the inputs to another. Each process is therefore a part of a larger process so that an organization can be seen as a network of interconnected processes. In addition to the inputs and outputs, a process is defined by controls (a set of rules that determine how the process is to be performed), and the needed resources. Hence, we may describe a process as, process = /(inputs, outputs, controls, resources).
