There is a single report of the dealkylation of a sterol side-chain in the whelk Buccinum undatum [52]. This organism also transformed 3H-lanosterol (33) to cholesterol (1), thus indicating its capability for de novo sterol biosynthesis. [Pg.24]

Hunt and Jevons (1966) have isolated a polysaccharide (glucan) sulfate from the hypobranchial mucin of the whelk Buccinum undatum. The infrared spectra of the glucan sulfate contained intense absorptions at 1240cm and over the range 840-800cm . These two bands disappeared entirely on desulfation, indicating ester sulfate (Hoffman et al., 1958), and other bands (940, 920, and 1000 cm ) also disappeared. Hunt and Jevons also attribute these to sulfate disappearance. [Pg.123]

Occurs in man and higher animals as Vitamin D precursor. Isol. from the horned snail Buccinum undatum and pigskin. Irradiation with uv light prod, vitamin D. Plates (MeOH aq./Et20). Mp 150-151° (anhyd.). [a]20 -113.6° (CHCI3). Oxid. in air. [Pg.587]

The kinetics of the binding of oxygen to the haemocyanin from the meirine gastropod Buccinum undatum under various conditions have been reported. In the presence of calcium ions the association rate constant is 7.8 x 10 1 mol s (25 "Q, and it is almost independent of pH. On the other hand, the dissociation rate constant increases significantly over the pH range 7.0 (A d=13 s ) to 8.0 (56 s ). The rate constant for the reaction of O2 with (undissociated) haemocyanin from Panulirus... [Pg.337]
