There is a single report of the dealkylation of a sterol side-chain in the whelk Buccinum undatum [52]. This organism also transformed 3H-lanosterol (33) to cholesterol (1), thus indicating its capability for de novo sterol biosynthesis. [Pg.24]

Hunt and Jevons (1966) have isolated a polysaccharide (glucan) sulfate from the hypobranchial mucin of the whelk Buccinum undatum. The infrared spectra of the glucan sulfate contained intense absorptions at 1240cm and over the range 840-800cm . These two bands disappeared entirely on desulfation, indicating ester sulfate (Hoffman et al., 1958), and other bands (940, 920, and 1000 cm ) also disappeared. Hunt and Jevons also attribute these to sulfate disappearance. [Pg.123]
