A peat bed facility, as described by Valentin, consists of a concrete-lined rectangular pit, a raised perforated floor to support the peat bed, and an underfloor distribution area for the polluted air feed. The peat bed is typically a mixture containing about one-half sphagnum or trichophorum peat and about one-half woody heather or brush wood, which is added to minimize consolidation of the peat. The bottom layer is entirely heather to aid in air distribution, and the entire bed is about 1 m (39 in.) deep. A plastic membrane is used at the walls to prevent air bypassing.

The first partially synthetic polymer dates back to 1869, when cellulose (wood pulp) was nitrated (nitrocellulose). The cellulose became ptocessible, and with the further addition of camphor (which acted as a plasticizer), it became a clear, tough, moldable product with the trade name Celluloid. It was widely used at the end of the 19th century in the form of combs, brushes, photographic film, and shirt collars. 

In the United States creosote specification AWPA PI /89 is intended for the treatment of timber for land and fresh-water use, and the heavier grade AWPA P13/89 for the preservation of marine piling and timber. In the United Kingdom a British Standard Specification, BS. 144/90, Part 1, specifies three grades of creosote two for pressure impregnation and one for brushing application. The standards of the West European Institute for Wood Preservation (WEI) are often used in Europe.

Paint compounds which do not provide these features to a satisfactory degree are either low-grade paints or merely coatings. A number of coatings have been offered on the market to provide protection against fire. Some of these are effective fire-retardant compounds, but the majority will not withstand weathering and thus have limited interior use only. To overcome this deficiency, manufacturers recommend a second or protective coat of moisture-resistant material. As an alternative means of achieving this same result, fire-retardant chemicals can be sprayed or brushed on wood and protected by a normal paint after the chemical dries. 

In the building field, as fire-resistant coating for wood, fiberboard, and metals, they have numerous applications. Unusual usage of the fire-resistant mastics is their application against brush fires on railway trestles constructed of wood which had been impregnated with as much as 3 gallons of creosote-petroleum oils per cubic foot.
