Since 1994 the Club has been self-sufficient, but it retains the active support of the DTI and EPSRC, as well as that of the Health and Safety Executive, the Institution of Electrical Engineers, and the British Computer Society. All of these bodies are represented on the Club s Steering Group.

The engineering profession has a two-tier structure. At the first level, there are the engineering institutions, that is, the ehartered professional bodies, eaeh of whieh covers a single or several closely related engineering diseiplines. Examples are the Institution of Electrical Engineers, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the British Computer Society. Each institution has its own rules regarding membership and its own codes of practice and conduct. 

Court action to resolve a contractual dispute is likely to be expensive. For this reason, it is common practice for contracts to include a statement that, in the event of a dispute that carmot be resolved by the parties themselves, they agree to accept the decision of an independent arbitrator. Provision is usually made for the arbitrator to be appointed either by the President of the British Computer Society or by the President of the Institution of Electrical Engineers. Both bodies maintain hsts of qualified arbitrators who have the necessary technical understanding.

Societies also participate, for example SAFECOMP 83 was co-sponsored by the Institution of Electrical Engineers, the British Computer Society, and the National Centre of Systems Reliability. 

Responsibility for the organisation of the club was contracted to the British Computer Society and the Institution of Electrical Engineers, together with ttie Centre for Software Reliability at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, and Felix Redmill, an independent consultant, is the Qub s Co-ordinator.

These dilemmas translate into some practical areas of concern which have been regularly voiced in professional circles such as the British Computer Society (BCS) Primary Care Special Interest Group (whose 29th July 2009 Summer Conference had papers such as Clinical Safety Testing of the Care Record and Clinical Risk Management on the agenda) ...
