The Scottish cross-sectional study of Raab et al. (1989) involved 501 Edinburgh children, aged 6—9 years with community Pb exposures expressed as a geometric mean, PbB = 10.4 p.g/dl. The children were tested with various parts of the British Ability Scales (BAS), showing that there were significant negative associations between log PbB and BAS combined score, number skills, and reading. [Pg.452]

There is, in most studies of the effects of low levels of lead, an association between uncontrolled IQ scores, and lead measures, with higher-lead children performing worse on IQ measures. This has been found when the lead measure used was teeth (Needleman et al, 1979 Winneke et al, 1979 Smith et al, 1983 Hansen et al, this volume), blood (Yule et al, 1981 Harvey et /.,1984 Raab et al, this volume) or hair (Thatcher et al, 1983). This association has been noted with WISC-R (and its various translations), the British Ability Scales, and (in earlier studies) the Stanford Binet Scales. The association is not always of significant magnitude (Silva... [Pg.21]

A simple example, which illustrates this approach in the chemical industry, was the one adopted a few years ago by the nuclear fuel company, BNFL (British Nuclear Fuels) in the UK in the early 1990s. This company had as one of its core technologies from within nuclear power context, the ability to handle fluorine on the bulk scale. It used this expertise to diversify into the manufacture of flu-orochemicals. One use for these organic chemicals was as intermediates in the production of biologically active chemicals and related materials. This fine chemicals business was a very different one to that of nuclear fuel. [Pg.162]

Radioisotope Scavenging. Clinoptilolite has a relatively high Si/Al ratio and has the ability to scavenge cesium radioisotopes from aqueous nuclear wastes. An example of its industrial-scale use is in the development of the site ion-exchange effluent plant (SIXEP) by British Nuclear Fuels at their Sellafield site. This uses a clinoptilohte, from Mud Hills, California, and meets the stringent performance requirements. The Cs selectivity of clinoptilolite has led to its possible use to reduce Cs radioisotope body burdens in sheep, and mordenite has been studied for the same use in reindeer. Mordenite also has been used to treat aqueous nuclear waste, as has an acid washed chabazite (AW500). [Pg.5104]
