Following publication of these results, the rate of primary cesarean sections for breech presentations increased to up to 80%. Nevertheless, spontaneous delivery in breech presentation may be the preferred option of the mother. In such cases it is particularly important to exclude cephalopelvic disproportion. [Pg.318]

More than 50% of femoral fractures are simple transverse, closed and non-comminuted (Rockwood 1991). The middle third is the most frequent site of fracture (70%), followed by the proximal third and lastly the distal third. Femoral fractures occurring before the child is able to walk are strongly associated with child abuse (Gross and Stranger 1983). Birth related fractures are exceedingly rare (0.13 per 1000) and usually associated with twin pregnancies, breech presentation or foetal osteoporosis (Morris et al. 2002). The majority are of spiral configuration. [Pg.133]

In breech presentations, an external cephalic version may be attempted. This has a success rate as high as 75%. The major risk of this procedure is abruptio placentae. Risk of occurrence is greatly increased with the presence of placenta previa and only somewhat increased with leiomyoma. It may be prudent to attempt this with delicate hands and gentle forces over a period of time because heavy handedness may result in a different outcome (cesarean section). [Pg.655]

At present, breech-loading rifles are used in all countries not only for military but also for sporting purposes... [Pg.263]

As the breech mechanisms of present guns are not designed to achieve complete sealing off the gases of combustion(complete obturation), the base of combustible cartridges should be made of a non-combustible material. This material can be either metal(brass or steel) or a noncombustible plastic. Obturators prepd from polyethylene are described in Ref 13-Cartridges prepd by these methods are known as partially combustible(Rei 15)... [Pg.206]

Evolutionists sensitive to the fallacy (Gould and Lewontin 1978) that all structures have arisen for their present purpose have invoked Voltaire s Dr. Pangloss Things cannot be other than they are, for since everything was made for a purpose, it follows that everything is made for the best purpose. Our noses were made to carry spectacles, so we have spectacles. Legs were clearly intended for breeches, and we wear them (Voltaire 1947). One could not simply assume that today s function was an explanation for mitochondria s origin. [Pg.72]

A piece of ordnance having a number of load-chambers attached to a vertiual axis, and consecutively presented at the rear of a cannon-bore. As each takes its place at the breech, it is advanced into the bore and locked before firing. (Haisuy, 1862 Dodge, 1856.)... [Pg.127]

This, as will be readily seefti, waa rubbing pretty close upon the breech-loader-of the present day. [Pg.326]

The grooves of this rifle are cut with a twist, which turns the bullet once in three feet six inches. There are aia grooves, and the spaces between them are left entirely square to the interior surface, presenting a kind of dove-tail appearance. The grooves are not quite so wide as the spaces between them. The breech is furnished with a vent or breathing hippie, about the diameter of a common pin, and hushed with platiiium. The lock has back-a< n,... [Pg.389]

At C, KE and KW reactors a stainless steel bellows is used. The predicted graphite contraction will result in more than doubling the gap and complete failure of the bellows. Some means of bellows repair will have to be developed to insure that the balls enter the VSR slot rather than being spread on top of the thermal shield. The fact that the Dutchman s Breeches with their curved ball flow channels are cast into the shield makes repair extremely difficult. As a last resort, it may be necessary to abandon the present ball system and install new hoppers on top of the shield. [Pg.66]
