A final remark regarding the vibrational spectra of CNTs covalentiy functionahzed with CPs, is that depending on the type of eovalent bond formed between the two constituents (CP and CNT), e.g. C-C, and C-N or C-S, composites with flagellene- and bracelet-type moleeular struetures, respectively, are obtained. All composites involving covalent functionalization of CNTs with CPs are eharacterized by steric hindrance effects.

The affinity of Cgo towards carbon nucleophiles has been used to synthesize polymer-bound Cgo [120] as well as surface-bound Cjq [121]. Polymers involving G q [54, 68, 69] are of considerable interest as (1) the fullerene properties can be combined with those of specific polymers, (2) suitable fullerene polymers should be spin-coatable, solvent-castable or melt-extrudable and (3) fullerene-containing polymers as well as surface-bound Cgo layers are expected to have remarkable electronic, magnetic, mechanical, optical or catalytic properties [54]. Some prototypes of polymers or solids containing the covalently bound Cjq moiety are possible (Figure 3.11) [68,122] fullerene pendant systems la with Cjq on the side chain of a polymer (on-chain type or charm bracelet ) [123] or on the surface of a solid Ib [121], in-chain polymers II with the fullerene as a part of the main chain ( pearl necklace ) [123], dendritic systems III, starburst or cross-link type IV or end-chain type polymers V that are terminated by a fullerene unit For III and IV, one-, two-and three-dimensional variants can be considered. In addition, combinations of all of these types are possible. 

A century later a totally different type of pearl had gained popularity in the west seed pearls. They were tiny, natural, white pearls of less than 2 millimetres in diameter. Though they were worn in large quantities, the effect was decorative rather than overpowering. They were strung and woven on white horsehair to give a lacy effect, or threaded onto wire. Popular motife were flowers and symmetrical patterns. Seed pearls were worn as chokers, bracelets and brooches. 

In Africa almost any type of shell - including those of land snails -has been used as jewellery, and strung like beads to make necklaces, bracelets or anklets. Shells are still a popular form of adornment, and are often combined with other organic materials such as feathers, or with brightly coloured glass beads. 

If asked, most people would probably name jewelry as the most important use of platinum. And the metal is used for that purpose. It is hard, beautilul, corrosion-res is rant—ideal for making bracelets, earrings, pins, rings, watch bands, and other types of jewelry.

An uncomplexed analog of valinomycin, cyclo L Val-oHyv-o Val-LHyv)3, called m so-valinomycin, has the same bracelet conformation as the complex of valinomycin, unlike the uncomplexed valinomycin (Pletnev et ai, 1977c). The six ester carbonyl oxygen atoms are directed toward the center of the bracelet and surround a large elliptical cavity. On the other hand, isoleucinomycin, cyc/o(Llle-DHyv-Dlle-LLac)3, differing from valinomycin only by substitution of valine residues by isoleucine, has a crystalline conformation intermediate between that of uncomplexed valinomycin and m so-valinomycin (Pletnev et a/., 1980). The backbone is stabilized by six NH- -0=C intramolecular hydrogen bonds however, five bonds are of the 4 1 type, and one is of the 5 1 type. Half of the molecule has the...

Different nanocrystals shapes are obtained by variation of the organic stabilizer type and its concentration. For instance, if organometallic compounds such as nickel bis-cyclooctene-l,5-diene(Ni(COD)2) are subjected to the heat treatment and decomposition in the presence of hexadecylamine (GDA) or trioctylphosphenoxide, the nanorods or nanospheres can be obtained [311]. The particles of bracelet shape and 27 nm size have been synthesized in Ref. [312]. The tetrahedral structures [313] have been obtained when the cobalt nanoclusters react with NaAOT/toluene at 130 °C. 

Zinc bracelets of the Zn-Al-Cd type had been used with great success on similar offshore undersea pipelines in the Gulf of Mexico since the mid-1950s, though the oil temperatures within the pipe were generally below about 32 C.
