Bovine diagnostic tests

Western blot A method to detect protein in a given sample of tissue homogenate or extract. It uses gel electrophoresis to separate denatured proteins by mass. Some diagnostic applications for the Western blot include Lyme disease, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (it is considered the gold standard for HIV diagnostic testing). [Pg.1579]

One example of a problem is the use of hydrolyzed bovine coUagen preparation (Cro-tein Q) into hair products. This led to development of allergic symptoms in hairdressers and in consumers [60-62]. Diagnostic tests showed that these individuals had IgE antibody to the derivatized coUagen. Crotein Q material was widely used for over 10 years in a variety of products so it was not clear how these individuals developed their IgE antibody, but certainly a small percentage of consumers were able to experience allergy symptoms. [Pg.194]
