Books damage

The acid in the paper used to make some books damages the paper and leaves it brittle. The paper in the book above was made with a process that left the paper acidic. [Pg.187]

This book follows the format used in The Nalco Guide to Boiler Failure Analysis, also authored by Robert D. Port and Harvey M. Herro, copyright 1991 by McGraw-Hill, Inc. Each chapter is divided into eight sections, giving specific information on damage ... [Pg.462]

This book is dedicated to pumps but we should mention that cavitation eould occur in other parts of the pumping system. Under the correct eireumstanees, valves and pipe elbows are also candidates to suffer damage from cavitation. [Pg.25]

As with any power equipment, gas turbines require a program of planned inspections with repair or replacement of damaged components. A properly designed and conducted inspection and preventive maintenance program can do much to increase the availability of gas turbines and reduce unscheduled maintenance. Inspections and preventive maintenance can be expensive, but not as costly as forced shutdowns. Nearly all manufacturers emphasize and describe preventive maintenance procedures to ensure the reliability of their machinery, and any maintenance program should be based on manufacturer s recommendations. Inspection and preventive maintenance procedures can be tailored to individual equipment application with references such as the manufacturer s instruction book, the operator s manual, and the preventive maintenance checklist. [Pg.744]

Accident frequencies were evaluated separately for the two types of activity mainline transit and rail yard classification. When an accident occurs and the tank car is damaged, the severity of public exposure depends on several factors, including tlie likelihood of a breach in tlie tank car, the severity level of tlie release (i.e., tlie rale or volume of spillage), the likelihood of an explosion, tlie magnitude of tlie explosion, and die dispersion pattern of the unignited vapors. Recall tliat Part II of tliis book deals witli explosions and tlieir effects Part III treats tliis subject of dispersion. Table 21.3.1 smnmarizes tlie transportation risk data for tlie mainline and rail yard segments of tlie tank car journey. [Pg.616]

Thus far in this book we have discussed one- or two-component photochemical systems which because of their relative simplicity lend themselves quite well to laboratory study. Consequently the mechanisms of many of the photoreactions we have discussed have been elucidated in exquisite detail. As we turn our attention in this chapter to some photochemical aspects of living systems, we shall find much more complex situations in which mechanistic details are just now beginning to be obtained. In some systems, such as those which exhibit phototaxis or phototropism, so little is known that our treatment must as a consequence be limited to only a brief discussion of these phenomena. The topics we will consider here are photosynthesis, vision, phototaxis and phototropism, and damage and subsequent repair of damage by light. Due to space limitations, a discussion of the very fascinating area of bioluminescence must be omitted. [Pg.580]
