Nondestmctive testing (qv) can iaclude any test that does not damage the plastic piece beyond its iatended use, such as visual and, ia some cases, mechanical tests. However, the term is normally used to describe x-ray, auclear source, ultrasonics, atomic emission, as well as some optical and infrared techniques for polymers. Nondestmctive testing is used to determine cracks, voids, inclusions, delamination, contamination, lack of cure, anisotropy, residual stresses, and defective bonds or welds in materials. [Pg.156]

Weldbonding is also called spot-weld adhesive bonding. It is a method of fabricating hardware that uses both welding and adhesive bonding techniques. A layer of adhesive, either in paste or in film form, is applied to one of the metal members to be joined. With plastic materials, the designer also has a greater choice of bonding techniques than with many other materials. Thermosets must be adhesively bonded or mechanically joined, but most thermoplastics can also be joined by solvent or heat welding. Additionally, plastic parts can be designed for assembly by means of molded-in, snap-fit, press-fit, pop-on, and threaded fasteners so that no additional adhesives, solvents, or special equipment is required. [Pg.408]

In contrast to the aerospace industry (see Aerospace applications), conditions prevailing in automobile manufacture dictate that pre-treatments (see Pre-treatment of aluminium) should have short process times and be tolerant of production variables. The surfaces produced should retain adequate bonding properties during extended storage under poorly controlled conditions. The surface may need to be sufficiently conductive to permit weld-bonding techniques. Pre-treatments applied at the coil stage must be compatible with mill oils and press lubricants, and withstand mechanical deformation in the press. [Pg.59]

PAEK can be both adhesively bonded and welded [40]. PAEK can be welded using standard techniques such as hot plate, friction and near field ultrasonic welding. The bonding technique was initially applied, in a pilot study, to the fabrication of the model encastre Warren beam shown in Fig. 1.8(a).
