The means by which metal complexes of chiral ligands block quadrants depends on the nature of the ligand and the metal-ligand adduct. In some cases, the stereogenic centers of the ligands exist in close proximity to the metal. In other cases, the stereogenic centers are located so far from the metal that it is not obvious how the effect of these distant stereocenters can be transmitted to the site of reaction. [Pg.560]

In 2002, Rovis and co-workers developed a series of triazolinm pre-catalysts, 75 and 76, and reported a highly enantioselective intramolecnlar Stetter reaction [66]. These tetracyclic strnctnres bear a fnsed-ring system in order to restrict rotation, taking advantage of the concept first introduced by keeper and Rawal, and further provide the ability to add steric bulk on both sides of the reacting site, blocking three of the fonr quadrants (Scheme 11, contrast Model A vs Model B) [67]. [Pg.92]

A modification of the basic block detector has been made such that each PM tube straddles over four quadrants of four different blocks (Fig. 2.4). It should be kept in mind that the cytochrome c molecule is about 30 A in diameter, and this is approximately the diameter of one of the cylindrical Fab arms of the antibody molecule. A bound Fab fragment probably would block an entire quadrant of the surface of the cytochrome molecule. It could bind to lysine-72 and still block the edge of the heme crevice from approach by oxidase or reductase. [Pg.469]

Together, these two assays opened up new avenues of research into actin and myosin interaction. Two different adaptations of the assay allow for the measurement of force by small numbers of myosin molecules (Kishino and Yanagida, 1988 Finer et al., 1994). The first of these uses a flexible, calibrated microneedle to which an actin filament is attached. The deflection of the needle as myosin moves the actin filament can be measured to determine the force (Kishino and Yanagida, 1988). In the second adaptation, an optical trap (Block, 1990) is used to measure both the force and step size of single myosin molecules (Finer etal., 1994). Beads are attached to each end of an actin filament. Dual optical traps position the beads (and thus the actin filament) in the vicinity of a single or a few myosin molecules. A sensitive quadrant detector is used to detect the position of the bead as myosin moves the actin filament. [Pg.182]

In the case of the tetrasubstituted acrylic acids the rigid DuPHOS ligands block both diagonally oriented quadrants so severly that the larger space requirements of these substrates cannot be accommodated. Here the more flexible Me-BPE ligand with its smaller methyl groups performs better. [Pg.55]

This problem is overcome most simply by modulation of the radiation source. Modulation means that the source radiation is switched on and off very rapidly. This can be done by using a rotating mechanical chopper placed directly in front of the source. A chopper is shown in Figs. 6.8 and 6.14. The mechanical chopper is a circle of metal sheet with opposite quadrants cut out. Every quarter turn of the chopper alternately blocks and passes the source radiation. In the same year, another annulated chiral monodentate Af-heterocyclic car-bene 101 based on an isoquinoline was reported by the Hong group (Scheme 3.63). The authors proposed that this isoquinoline-based chiral diami-nocarbene blocks three quadrants of the metal coordination sphere. Its application in enantioselective p-borylation of acyclic a,p-unsaturated amides led to the products in good yields (80-99%) and enantioselectivities (75-87% ee) [92]. Interestingly, changing the double bond geometry from E to Z resulted in reduced yield and enantioselectivity and gave the opposite enantiomer. [Pg.95]
