Blister packs tamper evidence

The packaging systems used were discussed in some detail in several EPARs. The number of products requiring a desiccant of some type is quite a high proportion of the total. In many cases both blister packs (of various compositions) and bottles (glass or plastics) were used for the same product. Effectiveness in protecting light-sensitive active ingredients and products is mentioned in the EPARs. Child resistance and tamper evidence is also mentioned.

Rigid blister packs may serve as a primary pack for a range of oral solid products (tablets, capsules, etc.), as a secondary display pack, to provide additional protection (physical and climatic) to a primary pack or as a security tamper-evident system for a product or pack. Soft blisters made from a flexible base can also be produced to contain liquids or semiliquids which can be dispensed by exposing a dispensing orifice. 

In these applications foil is contributing to such aspects as tamper-evidence/resistance, child-resistance (sachets, strips, blisters, pouches, etc.) and high barrier packs, and many have special features related to the use of aluminium foil. Some of these special features are identified below. 

Other than being used to pack solid dose medication, blisters or bubble packs, as they are often known, may find further applications in pharmaceutical packaging. These may be as a protective overwrap against physical damage, to prevent ingress or egress, to aid display or to act as a tamper-evident/tamper-resistant feature (i.e. packs which are not involved with the solid dosage form).
