Black Silk

Treatment with trisodium phosphate is necessary only for black silks. 

For black silk and especially for silks dyed with monopol black (on tin and catechu), the following method may be used8 ... 

A silk catalyst of especial efficiency has been developed for hydrogenation of aromatic nitro compounds.51 Boiling silk fibroin fibres with an aqueous solution of potassium tetrachloroplatinate affords a brown, hair-like silk-platinum chelate from which the actual black silk catalyst is obtained by hydrogenation at 9 atm in the presence of 1 % acetic acid. Silk (qv) suture is made from the threads spun by the silkworm Bombjx mori. The fiber is composed principally of the protein fibroin and has a natural coating composed of sericin gum. The gum is usually removed before braiding the silk yams to make sutures in a range of sizes. Fine silk sutures may be made by simply twisting the gum-coated silk yams to produce the desired diameter. White silk is undyed. Silk is either dyed black with logwood extract or blue with D C Blue No. 9. The suture may be uncoated or coated either with high molecular weight polydimethylsiloxane or with wax.

Many brilliantly coloured and tinctorially strong basic dyes for silk and tannin-mordanted cotton were developed in the early decades of the synthetic dye industry. Most of these belonged to the acridine, azine, oxazine, triarylmethane, xanthene and related chemical classes their molecules are usually characterised by one delocalised positive charge. Thus in crystal violet (1.29) the cationic charge is shared between the three equivalent methylated p-amino nitrogen atoms. A few of these traditional basic dyes are still of some interest in the dyeing of acrylic fibres, notably as components of cheap mixture navies and blacks, but many modified basic dyes were introduced from the 1950s onwards for acrylic and modacrylic fibres, as well as for basic-dyeable variants of nylon and polyester [44] ... 

Iron(lll) nitrate is used as a mordant for dyeing black and buff. Other applications are in tanning weighting silks and in preparation of analytical standards.
