Black Silk

Treatment with trisodium phosphate is necessary only for black silks. [Pg.524]

For black silk and especially for silks dyed with monopol black (on tin and catechu), the following method may be used8 ... [Pg.525]

A silk catalyst of especial efficiency has been developed for hydrogenation of aromatic nitro compounds.51 Boiling silk fibroin fibres with an aqueous solution of potassium tetrachloroplatinate affords a brown, hair-like silk-platinum chelate from which the actual black silk catalyst is obtained by hydrogenation at 9 atm in the presence of 1 % acetic acid. Its activity, calculated on platinum content, for hydrogenation of nitrobenzene to aniline, is 250 times that of platinum dioxide. [Pg.558]

In former times, some Occultists, more black than white, were curious enough to go to specific Masses, on the great days of Christmas or Easter, in one of the large Parisian metropolitan churches. At the moment of Elevation, when the celebrant elevated the Host, then the Cup, they would go to the axis of the nave, at the far end, by the doors. At that precise instant they would expose a crystal ball, that classic instrument of clairvoyance and a powerful psychic condenser, which had previously been immersed in clear running water, to empty it of all previously accumulated radiation. Immediately afterwards they would cover it again in a square of black silk, a good isolator. [Pg.77]

Andre looked up to see a middle-aged Asian-ethnic man dressed in a smart black silk suit with flapping sleeves. The tone and the easy body posture indicated an experienced negotiator too smooth for a lawyer, lacking the confidence of the truly wealthy. A middleman. [Pg.352]

Black Silk - for polyethylene film in technically demanding applications calling for superior dispersion, dilution at high additions, and down-gauging with good opacity and UV protection. For best UV protection, it contains carbon black of 20-25 nm particle size at 40% content, and ingredients meeting European food contact requirements. [Pg.91]

In 1904, the Kew laboratories were visited by representatives of Samnel Courtauld Co. Ltd., who were silk weavers looking for new raw materials and new opportimities to grow. The success and profitability of Samnel Courtauld had been built on the nineteenth-century fashion for black silk monming crepe, and the company was planning its stock market flotation. The visitors to Kew knew that Chardonnet s process was creating a Incrative market for artificial silk in... [Pg.1155]

I beheld a Matron sitting, to my appearance very pious and modest of a grave deportment and civil look. She was pretty well in Age, not very tall... but lusty and fatt. She was of a pale dead colour, and cloathed. .. with a black vestment, like a Rain-Cloath from the Top of her Head to the Feet the cloath being a vail of black silk, as if she was in mourning. ... [Pg.84]

Silk (qv) suture is made from the threads spun by the silkworm Bombjx mori. The fiber is composed principally of the protein fibroin and has a natural coating composed of sericin gum. The gum is usually removed before braiding the silk yams to make sutures in a range of sizes. Fine silk sutures may be made by simply twisting the gum-coated silk yams to produce the desired diameter. White silk is undyed. Silk is either dyed black with logwood extract or blue with D C Blue No. 9. The suture may be uncoated or coated either with high molecular weight polydimethylsiloxane or with wax. [Pg.269]

Randy Morelock, the bartender on duty at Nectar, wore a graphite-gray silk satin shirt with a black necktie and looked exactly... [Pg.74]

Nursing alcohol lamps and charcoal fires in his tiny home laboratory during the Easter vacation of 1856, a teenager slowly teased out the constituents of a black and tarry goo. Working nights, weekends, and holidays on chemistry, he was searching for a test-tube substitute for quinine, the antimalaria drug derived from plants. The black precipitate he had made was obviously not quinine, but the youth was well trained in chemistry, so he did not throw it out. Instead, he treated it with alcohol, and a fabulously intense purple appeared. Then he tested the purple on a piece of silk. [Pg.15]

Many brilliantly coloured and tinctorially strong basic dyes for silk and tannin-mordanted cotton were developed in the early decades of the synthetic dye industry. Most of these belonged to the acridine, azine, oxazine, triarylmethane, xanthene and related chemical classes their molecules are usually characterised by one delocalised positive charge. Thus in crystal violet (1.29) the cationic charge is shared between the three equivalent methylated p-amino nitrogen atoms. A few of these traditional basic dyes are still of some interest in the dyeing of acrylic fibres, notably as components of cheap mixture navies and blacks, but many modified basic dyes were introduced from the 1950s onwards for acrylic and modacrylic fibres, as well as for basic-dyeable variants of nylon and polyester [44] ... [Pg.25]

Iron(lll) nitrate is used as a mordant for dyeing black and buff. Other applications are in tanning weighting silks and in preparation of analytical standards. [Pg.431]
