Black Jack

John Champion patented in 1758 the process of producing brass and zinc from the common ore of zincblende (ZnS) or black jack (patent number 726). This ore had previously been considered worthless, but even with this advance it is obvious that metallic zinc was still far too expensive to use in brass production by direct mixing, a process which was patented by James Emerson in 1781 (no. 1297). Watson (1786), however, describes the use of zinc in the production of high-quality gilding brasses such as pinchbeck, tomback and Mannheim gold (see below). [Pg.204]

All of the I/S produced by WD are randomly interstratified, with the possible exception of the Black Jack sample (Figure 3) and the most illitic Kinney sample (Figure 4), both of which show signs of partial R1 ordering between illite and smectite layers. For these samples, the 001 XRD reflections are displaced towards larger angles, and a very weak superlattice reflection is visible at small angles. [Pg.310]

Unit cells of these two structures are shown in Figure 1.37 and Figure 1.38, respectively. They are named after two different naturally occurring mineral forms of zinc sulfide. Zinc blende is often contaminated by iron, making it very dark in colour and thus lending it the name of Black Jack . Structures of the same element or compound that differ only in their atomic arrangements are termed polymorphs. [Pg.41]

Ross and Hendricks (1945) redefined beidellite as the aluminum-rich end member of the dioctahedral montmorillonites. Many of their samples were later found to be mixtures and for some time the concept of a high-aluminum montmorillonite was in considerable disrepute. Recently, Weir and Greene-Kelly (1962) made a careful analysis of purified material from the Black Jack Mine from Beidell, Colorado, and definitely established that it is monomineralic and an ideal Al-rich end member (Table XXVIII). They suggest that beidellites and montmorillonites should be divided at the composition at which the lattice charges from octahedral and tetrahedral substitution equal one another . The layer charge for beidellite does not appear to be any larger than for montmorillonites. [Pg.63]

Relations between Americans and Mexicans were not helped very much by the antics of the Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa. Villa frequently led his bandits on raids against towns on the American side of the Rio Grande and then fled back into Mexico. When finally the Americans had had enough, they sent General "Black Jack" Pershing in pursuit of the elusive bandit. [Pg.101]

Mr. Crane seized a piece of scratch paper and on the basis of his memory, figured out 34 gallons. He stated that the school board would give him that. The school board, he said, would give him anything he wanted. They had just given him 100 for three toilets. He scoffed at the Black Jack estimate. [Pg.69]

I asked him what sort of a man was Professor Crane. Professor Crane, by the way, had called his class of three little urchins together while I was copying the names from the register. He used the class to recite his own virtues to me and to cast innuendoes at Professor Magee at Black Jack who had displaced him, both for my benefit. Now boys, what is a dual purpose chicken ... [Pg.70]

The rarest of the smectites is beidellite. Apart from the beidellite model of the Black Jack Mine, there are those of Unterrupsroth (Germany) it is certain that small amounts of beidellite are found here and there in the masses of montmorillonite of Askania. [Pg.110]

The ordered state (or semi-ordered), which resists all processes of intracrystalline swelling, does not seem to lesistdispersion. The beidellite of Black Jack Mine shows maximum dispersion when it is saturated with Na cations in water. Weir [1960] ascertains that the recuperation of this dispersed beidellite in a dry state can lead to a turbostratic structure. It must, therefore, be admitted that there is a certain instability in the ordered (or semi-ordered) arrangement. [Pg.116]
