Bismoles

Bismuth Subsalicylate. (2-Hydroxybenzoato-0 )-oxobismuth [14882-18-9] (Pepto-Bismol) maybe made by the process described in Reference 10. Bismuth subsaHcylate has been shown to bind toxins produced by several bacterial strains. It may also act as a result of its saHcylate component on prostaglandin formation and have specific intestinal antisecretory activity. It has been found to be effective in the prevention and therapy of... [Pg.202]

Bismuth subsahcylate [14882-18-9] Pepto-Bismol, is a basic salt of varying composition, corresponding approximately to i9-H0CgH4C02(Bi0). Like a number of other insoluble bismuth preparations, it is not currentiy approved in the United States for the treatment of peptic ulcer disease but is under active investigation for this purpose (180). It does appear to be effective for the rehef of mild diarrhea and for the prevention of travelers diarrhea (181). The ready availabiUty of this dmg, however, may lead to its ovemse and result in toxic effects caused by both the saUcylate and bismuth components. It has been suggested that bismuth subsahcylate is somewhat effective in the symptomatic treatment of isosporiasis, a disease caused by the intracellular parasite Isospora belli (182). [Pg.135]

WEB The active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol (an over-the-counter remedy for upset stomach) is bismuth subsalicylate, C7H5Bi04. Analysis of a 1.500-g sample of Pepto-Bismol yields 346 mg of bismuth. What percent by mass is bismuth subsalicylate (Assume that there is no other bismuth-containing compound in Pepto-Bismol.)... [Pg.69]

The attempted exchange reaction between 27 and phenylbismuth diiodide gave only intractable products. Apparently the bismole 31 is unstable under these Lewis acidic conditions. However, iodination of 27 gave 30 which, on lithiation followed by reaction with phenylbismuth diiodide, afforded the desired l-phenyl-2,5-dimethylbismole (31)," which could be... [Pg.327]

The reaction of the crowded stibole 53 and bismole 54 with lithium followed by addition of lithium cyclopentadienide (Scheme 9) gives mixtures of the corresponding monostibaferrocene 69 and monobismaferro-cene 70, respectively, with ferrocene.25 The more volatile ferrocene is easily removed by sublimation. Rather small amounts of the crowded diheteroferrocenes 55 or 56 are formed in this reaction. [Pg.333]

Heterocycles with Arsenic, Antimony, and Bismuth. Arsoles, stilboles, and bismoles (Scheme 54) are five-membered heterocycles for which experimental data do not indicate aromatic properties, while semiempirical calculations (CNINDO or CNDO/ S) showed that the anions are aromatic.
