Birds and small mammals

Diet and proximity to tributyltin affect butyltin concentrations in waterfowl (Kannan et al. 1998a). Seaducks that fed mainly on molluscs had higher concentrations of butyltins than predatory birds feeding on hsh, other birds, and small mammals. Continued exposure of birds to butyltin compounds occurs in harbors and marinas where tributyltin is used on vessels >25 m in length (Kannan et al. 1998a). [Pg.603]

Birds and small mammals are obvious delights for the wildlife gardener, but smaller creatures can be just as beautiful and fascinating to observe. The larger flying insects such as butterflies and dragonflies are easy to spot, but close Inspection of your plants may reveal a host of smaller but no less interesting Invertebrates. [Pg.107]

Seeds are an important food source for many insects, birds, and small mammals. Seed predation is usually less in agricultural systems due to the intensive soil disturbance, seed burial by tillage, and lack of habitats for predators. However, studies have found significant weed seed loss by predation when seeds remained on the soil surface. [Pg.65]

Small mammals are also favored by conservation tillage. In Illinois, no-till corn fields had more abundant and more diverse populations of invertebrates, birds, and small mammals than conventionally tilled corn (Warburton and Klimstra, 1984). A greater diversity and proportionately more predators were noted within the invertebrate community in no-till fields. Small mammal populations also were more stable in no-till. [Pg.524]

Sodium chloride and other salts are essential but may upset the ionic balance and osmotic pressure if consumed in too high doses. Babies, small birds, and small mammals are very sensitive. Too much or too little in the water will kill aquatic organisms. [Pg.18]

Berries seeds By planting species that bear berries and fruits, and leaving seedbearing stems standing at the end of the growing season, you will help birds and small mammals survive the winter months when their natural food sources are greatly reduced. Standing stems also provide hibernation sites for insects. [Pg.247]

Grow berrying and fruiting plants in your yard, including some species such as hawthorn, blackthorn, rowan, crab apple, elder, ivy, pyracantha, cotoneaster, rugosa rose, and bramble. These plants will provide a supply of food for birds and small mammals. [Pg.318]

In 1922, Evans and Bishop discovered a new nutritional factor, initially termed factor X, later vitamin E and tocopherol, that was essential for a normal development of fetuses in pregnant rats. They found wheat germ oil to be a particularly rich source of this fat-soluble vitamin. Several compounds with vitamin E activity were subsequently isolated and named a-, P-, and y-tocopherol. The structure of a-tocopherol was elucidated in 1937 and the next year its first synthesis was achieved. A variety of signs of vitamin E deficiency have been reported in birds and small mammals but rarely in humans. The exact biochemical function of vitamin E in the latter is subject to ongoing debate. In the early years of vitamin E research several bioassays were developed, e.g., the fetus resorption test in rats. [Pg.154]

Another point of entry is the direct ingestion of spilt or exposed seeds by seed-eating birds and small mammals. They, in turn, may be eaten by predators,... [Pg.119]
