Biotechnology opposition

In biotechnological processes involving ions at concentrations higher than normal (>0.1 M), the influence of the ionic strength and the non-ideahty of the solution on the yield must also be considered. In case, where attractive ion-ion interactions are involved, a higher ionic strength reduces the yield, whereas the opposite applies for repulsive interactions (Kasche, 1986). 

Some of the effects of biotechnology on agricultural chemistry will be in direct competition with or in opposition to the use of chemicals, such as the development of pest resistant crops taking the place of present pesticides. Other applications will enhance or allow new uses for agricultural chemicals, such as (1) the transfer of herbicide resistance into otherwise... 

Einally, the enormous number of possible combinations of oppositely charged polymeric components that can be involved in interpolyelectrolyte complexation offers attractive perspectives for the preparation of water-soluble multicompartment nanosized macromolecular co-assemblies with desired properties. We believe that such novel IPECs are very promising and will be in demand for their future applications in nanomedicine (e.g., gene and drug delivery, and diagnostic systems), biotechnology, and nanotechnology as nanocontainers, nanoreactors, and molecular templates for nanoelectronic devices. 

The opposite extreme would be not to seek patent protection on biotechnology discoveries at all. However, this would contradict the government s commitment to commercializing Federally supported technology and protecting the resulting intellectual property rights.
