This investment inclndes both internal and external investment in both discovery and development inclnding investing in small and emerging pharma (biotech) organizations to bnild pipelines. Biotech companies have relied on this investment more heavily since the collapse of the IPO market in 2001. 

The UK has traditionally been a strong performer in terms of R D for drug development and it is a position that the government wishes to maintain (43). The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) reports that 15 out of the world s top 75 medicines were discovered and developed in Britain - more than any other countiy outside the U.S.A. (43, 47). Moreover, the UK s biotech companies account for 43% of all biotechnology drugs in advanced clinical trials in Europe (43, 48). 

Sweet sorghum biorefineries are also a target for the industry with the implementation in 2013 of a 20 million gallons per year (MMGY) bioethanol facility in Florida, US, and the launch of high-biomass-sorghum strains from the biotech companies NexSteppe and Ceres, to be used in US, Brazil, and Europe (Platform, 2015). 

In addition, it has become mandatory for companies or organizations wanting to have their biotech crops approved in Europe to provide reference material as well as a specific detection method. This is then tested and validated by ENGL, the European Network of GMO Laboratories, coordinated by the Community Reference Laboratory of the Joint Research Centre in Ispra, Italy. Biotech and pharma companies outsource a number of different functions. In the discovery phase, the syntheses of building blocks, intermediates, and especially libraries are frequently outsourced, often to India or Eastern Europe. Offshoring of chemistry is frequent, that of biology less so. But ADME Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, and Excretion) studies and animal models for preclinical development are now sometimes done in China, for example, at Shanghai s WuXi Pharmatech, whose customers currently include nearly all of big pharma and big biotech. ...
