Entities that produce collagen within the CNS may be confused with the wall of an abscess (see Fig. 20.4 and Tables 20.5, 20.7, 20.10, and 20.11). If abscess is suspected during the biopsy procedure, sterile tissue should be sent to microbiology for culture. A negative culture is better than a missed opportunity to find something treatable. Failing culture, stains for microorganisms may help. 

Surgical procedures often result in nosocomial infections at the surgical site due to the patient s own normal resident, but opportunistic, skin microorganisms (e.g., S. epidermidis), which will readily colonize the traumatized tissues. Antibiotic-resistant microorganisms within the hospital environment may also contaminate the surgical wound [10]. Other common medical procedures, such as urinary and/or venous catheterization, as discussed previously, or endoscopy, biopsy procedures, etc., often increase the susceptibility to nosocomial infection... 

It was shown that the human heart mitochondria, incubated within 15 hr after death, metabolized [14- C]erucic acid more slowly than [10- C]oleic acid as measured both as release and as recovery of perchloric acid soluble intermediates (Clouet etal., 1974). Similar results were obtained in a second experiment in which mitochondria were isolated from human heart auricles by biopsy procedures during surgery. These authors concluded that the rates of erucic acid activation and p-oxidation are decreased similar to that observed in experimental animals (Clouet and Bezard, 1979).

Automated biopsy guns use 14- to 18-gauge cutting needles. The automated core-biopsy procedure imposes the firing of the needle into the lesion for tissue acquisition and the removal of the needle from the breasttorecoverthe biopsy specimen (Fig. 4.5b-d).

Shown in Figure 5.19, our MR-compatible bone biopsy robot has two modes of operation tele-operative and autonomous. The system has 5 DOFs (linear, turret, elbow roU, wrist pitch, and penetration) in addition to the drilling joint. The tool is equipped with force sensors to send drilling forces as haptic feedback to the operator. The system allows the surgeon to tele-operatively control the drilling process during the bone biopsy procedure by means of force and vision feedbacks.
