Many quantitative aspects of exposure pathways and their relevant application during environmental risk assessment depend on regional biogeochemical peculiarities and should be undoubtedly considered on the regional scale. Accordingly this part includes some characteristic examples and case studies from local up to regional and continental dimensions. We discuss the importance of the trans-boundary of pollutant exposure as well as the application of critical load methodology for risk estimates.

This book is the first to summarize the biomonitoring of heavy metals in terrestrial ecosystems using plants. Based on a sizeable collection of case studies drawn from diverse geobotanical areas throughout the world, the book covers chemical and analytical aspects, processes of bioaccumulation as well as geobotanical and biogeochemical prospecting. 

In this book, the treatment first follows traditional compartments (Chapters 2, 3, 4, and 5) although some exchanges with other compartments are considered. Fundamental aspects of the science of atmosphere, waters, and soils are described, together with current environmental questions, exemplified by case studies. Subsequently, the organic chemistry of the environment is considered in Chapter 6, and quantitative aspects of transfer across phase boundaries are described in Chapter 7, where examples are given of biogeochemical cycles.
