There are already several comprehensive reviews of the chemical, biochemical and medicinal aspects of aminoglycosides This report mainly describes the progress made in chemistry and medicinal chemistry since 1970. Previous work will be discussed only when it appears necessary for better understanding. 

Today, radiopharmaceuticals do belong to the standard instrumentation of nuclear medicine in particular, and medicine in general, both in the context of diagnosis and therapy. Parallel to the application of radiopharmaceuticals in hospitals, radiopharmaceutical chemistry demonstrates its capability to contribute to the industrial development of new drugs. Furthermore, radiopharmacy is adding its value to fundamental biochemical and medicinal research. A main focus will be on its unique contribution to brain research, probably the most exciting area of research of this new century. 

In Chapt. 4, we have examined the hydrolysis of a variety of amido groups occurring in drugs and other xenobiotics. As we saw in Chapt. 5, cyclic amides (i.e., lactams) constitute a class of special interest in medicinal chemistry. The present chapter is dedicated to another class of amides of even greater medicinal and biochemical interest, namely that of peptides. 

The biochemical and pharmacological properties of the kappa receptor and the differences between the kappa, mu and delta receptors have been reviewed elsewhere. The reader is directed to the opioid review articles by Rees and Hunter (1990) [4], Casy (1989) [3] and Leslie (1987) [10] and also to two shorter reviews which deal specifically with kappa agonists the review by Horwell published in 1988 entitled Kappa Opioid Analgesics [8] and the review by Millan in 1990 on kappa opioid receptors and analgesia [9]. An account of the medicinal chemistry of selective opioid agonists and antagonists was published in 1990 by Zimmerman and Leander [5].
