In the past, mica has been the material of choice for the interacting surfaces because of the ease of handling and since molecularly smooth surfaces can be fabricated mica surface coated with a thin film of other materials (e.g., lipid monolayers or bilayers, metal films, polymer films, or other macromolecules such as proteins) can also be used. The use of alternative materials such as molecularly smooth sapphire and silica sheets and carbon and metal oxide surfaces is also being explored. [Pg.53]

At potentials positive to the bulk metal deposition, a metal monolayer-or in some cases a bilayer-of one metal can be electrodeposited on another metal surface this phenomenon is referred to as underiDotential deposition (upd) in the literature. Many investigations of several different metal adsorbate/substrate systems have been published to date. In general, two different classes of surface stmetures can be classified (a) simple superstmetures with small packing densities and (b) close-packed (bulklike) or even compressed stmetures, which are observed for deposition of the heavy metal ions Tl, Hg and Pb on Ag, Au, Cu or Pt (see, e.g., [63, 64, 65, 66, 62, 68, 69 and 70]). In case (a), the metal adsorbate is very often stabilized by coadsorbed anions typical representatives of this type are Cu/Au (111) (e.g. [44, 45, 21, 22 and 25]) or Cu/Pt(l 11) (e.g. [46, 74, 75, and 26 ]) It has to be mentioned that the two dimensional ordering of the Cu adatoms is significantly affected by the presence of coadsorbed anions, for example, for the upd of Cu on Au(l 11), the onset of underiDotential deposition shifts to more positive potentials from 80"to Br and CE [72]. [Pg.2753]

Multilayers of Diphosphates. One way to find surface reactions that may lead to the formation of SAMs is to look for reactions that result in an insoluble salt. This is the case for phosphate monolayers, based on their highly insoluble salts with tetravalent transition metal ions. In these salts, the phosphates form layer stmctures, one OH group sticking to either side. Thus, replacing the OH with an alkyl chain to form the alkyl phosphonic acid was expected to result in a bilayer stmcture with alkyl chains extending from both sides of the metal phosphate sheet (335). When zirconium (TV) is used the distance between next neighbor alkyl chains is - 0.53 nm, which forces either chain disorder or chain tilt so that VDW attractive interactions can be reestablished. [Pg.543]

Langmuir-Blodgett films (LB) and self assembled monolayers (SAM) deposited on metal surfaces have been studied by SERS spectroscopy in several investigations. For example, mono- and bilayers of phospholipids and cholesterol deposited on a rutile prism with a silver coating have been analyzed in contact with water. The study showed that in these models of biological membranes the second layer modified the fluidity of the first monolayer, and revealed the conformation of the polar head close to the silver [4.300]. [Pg.262]

The band structure of four concentric armchair tubules with 10, 20, 30, and 40 carbon atoms around their circumferences (external diameter 27.12 A) was calculated, where the tubules were positioned to minimize the energj for all bilayered pairs 17). The optimised interlayer distance of a concentric bilayered CNT by density-functional theory treatment was calculated to be 3.39 A [23] compared with the experimental value of 3.4 A [24]. Modification of the electronic structure (especially metallic state) due to the inner tube has been examined for two kinds of models of concentric bilayered CNT, (5, 5)-(10, 10) and (9, 0)-(18, 0), in the framework of the Huckel-type treatment [25]. The stacked layer patterns considered are illustrated in Fig. 8. It has been predicted that metallic property would not change within this stacking mode due to symmetry reason, which is almost similar to the case in the interlayer interaction of two graphene sheets [26]. Moreover, in the three-dimensional graphite, the interlayer distance of which is 3.35 A [27], there is only a slight overlapping (0.03-0.04 eV) of the HO and the LU bands at the Fermi level of a sheet of graphite plane [28,29],... [Pg.47]

Epitaxial effects are not limited to single-crystalline substrates. The possibility for substrate-induced epitaxial development in the difficult case of ZnSe (cf. conventional electrodeposition) has been established also by using strongly textured, albeit polycrystalline, zinc blende (111) CdSe electrolytic films to sustain monolithic growth of ZnSe in typical acidic selenite baths [16]. Investigation of the structural relations in this all-electrodeposited ZnSe/CdSe bilayer revealed that more than 30-fold intensification of the (111) ZnSe XRD orientation can be obtained on the textured (111) CdSe films, compared to polycrystalline metal substrates (Fig. 4.2).
