A general speeifieation for modern power reeovery (hot gas) expanders in FCC serviee is given below. This speeifieation may be used as either a starting point for a plant-speeifie write-up, or as a generalized doeument that faeilitates bid evaluation efforts. Remember that operational referenees are a shared vendor/eontraetor/plant operator (owner) responsibility.

Bid evaluations must include a study of the peculiar costs expected to be associated with a given unit, and these include first cost of equipment, power (or driver) operating costs, maintenance for entire unit, foundations, special structural limitations, pipe layout, and perhaps others. 

When packings are purged with air or other gas, the manufacturer should specify the quantity passing into the cylinder and out to the air. Accessibility of packing, bearings, and valves should be identified on drawings for review at the time of bid evaluation.

Purchasing specifications include not only performance data, materials, structural details, plot plan considerations, guarantees, etc., but also methods of bid evaluation, applicable unit costs, energy costs and amortization period. A good group of specifications will permit a true cost comparison of competitive towers on an installed, as well as on an operating, basis. Once the quotes are received, compile a short list" of the more attractive bids. Evaluate the alternate quotes by comparing to experimental data, correlation predictions, or sound design criteria.
