FOLLOW-UP PROBLEM 11.1 Use partial orbital diagrams to show how the atomic orbitals of the central atoms mix to form hybrid orbitals in (a) beryllium fluoride, BeF (b) silicon tetrachloride, SiCI (c) xenon tetrafluoride, XeF4. [Pg.330]

The elements of the second period are the least metallic in each group, and only lithium forms an ionic fluoride, LiF. Beryllium fluoride, BeF, exists in the solid state as chains of tetrahedrally coordinated beryllium atoms, with each pair of beryllium atoms bridged by two fluorine atoms, as shown in Figure 7.1 The chain structure may be thought of in terms of each beryllium atom forming two electron-pair bonds with two fluorine atoms, and then acquiring two more electron pairs as two more fluorine atoms (bonded to the two adjacent Be atoms) use their lone pairs of electrons to produce two coordinate bonds. In this way, the beryllium atom acquires its share of an octet of electrons associated with maximum stability. [Pg.144]

Beryllium fluoride is hygroscopic and highly soluble in water, although its dissolution rate is slow. FluoroberyUates can be readily prepared by crystallization or precipitation from aqueous solution. Compounds containing the BeP ion are the most readily obtained, though compounds containing other fluoroberyUate ions can also be obtained, eg, NH BeF, depending upon conditions. [Pg.75]

Beryllium fluoride. [CAS 7787-49-7], BeF2, is readily soluble in water, dissolving in its own water of hydration as BeFo 2H2O. The compound cannot be crystallized from solution and is prepared by thermal decomposition of ammonium fluoberyllate. (NH BeF ... [Pg.197]

Cross-polarization in the solution state has been employed for the selective observation of sealar-eoupled quadrupolar nuclei in anisotropic phases. The method has been apphed to a mixture of beryllium fluoride complexes. Despite severe overlap in the Be speetrum, a quadrupolar splitting was observed for BeFs whereas no sueh sphtting was resolved for Bep4 . NMR spectra of C-iodomethane dissolved in thermotropic and lyotropic liquid crystalline solvents have been used to measure and C- H dipolar couplings. From the... [Pg.529]

The molecular structure was assumed to be pyramidal with Li atom at the top and BeP located at the bottom. Beryllium atom was taken at the center of the equilateral triangle formed by the three P atoms. The Be-F distance was estimated from that of BeF(g). The bond distance of Li-F was taken from Porter and Zeller (2). Vibrational frequencies were estimated by comparison with related fluorides. The principal moments of inertia are B 10.7996 x 10 and = 18.5503 x 10 ... [Pg.379]
