In the mid-1990s BASF, Ludwigshafen and APME, Brussels had run experiments witli electronic scrap in cooperation with the BC-Berlin Consult plant in Liibben, Germany. The BC plant consisted of an indirectly heated rotary kiln with 300 mm inner diameter and 3 m heated length driven at 750-850°C [20, 21, 55]. Two types of material were investigated, a fine fraction and a typically shredded electronic scrap fraction. Up to... [Pg.558]

But when the Allied investigators got around to Auschwitz, his colleagues had weakened and now it was fantastic for them to pretend that they scarcely knew him. Schmitz admitted that, after consulting the other directors, he had sent Krauch to work for Goering. Schmitz admitted that for years he and Krauch had put their heads together twice a week in Berlin. Then Krauch s colleagues really "threw him a curve" (he liked these American expressions). Every last one of them blamed Auschwitz on "compulsory quotas imposed by the government." And who shoved these quotas down their throats They did not say "Why, the G.B. Chem office, which was too big for any one man." No, they said "G.B. Chem — he set the quotas."... [Pg.240]

According to many scholars I consulted, there will never be another individual on par with Einstein. Thomas Levenson, author Einstein in Berlin, suggests, It seems unlikely that [science] will produce another Einstein in the sense of a broadly recognized emblem of genius. The sheer complexity of models being explored [today] confines almost all practitioners to parts of the problem. Unlike today s researchers, Einstein required little or no collaboration. Einstein s paper on special relativity contained no references to others or to prior work. [Pg.220]

The idea is expressed in J. T. Eller, Seconde dissertation sur les elemens , Memoires de lAcademie RoyaldesSciencesetBellesLettres, [Berlin], 2 (1746),pp. 25-48, on 43-4. This is held at Glasgow University Library Special Collections, but that copy was acquired as part of the Hunterian Collection in the early nineteenth century. If Witt was able to consult Eller s work while at Glasgow then it would probably have been in the library of an individual whom he knew, such as Black or Anderson. [Pg.199]

Martius, by now a partner in the AGFA firm of Berlin, obtained a sample of chrysoidine (18) and handed it over to his consultant, A.W. Hofmann (Figure 11), for scientific investigation. In January 1877, Hofmann published details of the constitutions, as well as the methods of preparation, for 18, phenylene brown (15) and the related aniline yellow (16), much to the chagrin of Caro and his colleagues33-36. Soon it was shown that phenylene, or Bismarck brown (15), was in fact a bisazo compound 15a (Scheme 6). [Pg.19]

Work on the present volume started in late 1997 when I was first contacted by W. Martienssen. An initial outline of the volume was written in January of 1998. At this point I want to express my sincere gratitude to George Comsa, Bonn, and Gerhard Ertl, Berlin, for their support by making valuable suggestions, concerning both the outhne and the choice of possible authors. In fact, the choices made at the time proved to be excellent ones, and the consulting of G. Comsa and G. Ertl turned out to be extremely helpful for the evolution of the present volume. [Pg.545]

Very extensive computations have been carried out on the dynamics of reactions of the type A+BC. They are either founded on classical or on quantum mechanics, are either to be considered exact or involving more or less drastic approximations and have been based either in the real three dimensional world or in somewhat artificial spaces of lower dimensionality. These computations are thus attempts to solve the three-body problem more or less accurately. Other Chapters in this book extensively review this subject [41]. The papers, presented at a meeting celebrating "Fifty Years of Chemical Dynamics", held in Berlin in 1982 and published as an issue of the Berichte der Bunsen Gesellschaft in 1982, should be consulted, also for providing a historical perspective [42],... [Pg.396]
