The reaction conditions of this modified indazole synthesis can also be applied to the preparation of 1,2-diazanaphthalenes, the so-called cinnolines, although in such syntheses no deprotonation prior to cyclization is likely to occur. Ruchardt and Hassmann (1980) obtained 4-phenylcinnoline (6.85) in 53% yield from 2-(a-methyl-ene-benzyl)aniline (Scheme 6-53).

Auch die Reaktion von Azido-benzol und seinen Methyl-, Chlor- und Nitro-Derivaten mit Methyl-benzolen in Gegenwart von Bortrifluorid fuhrt in den meisten Fallen zu Gemischen von aromatischen Aminen, wobei man z.B. aus 4-Azido-l-methyl-benzol und 1,3-Dimethyl-benzol als Hauptprodukt (2,4-Dimethyl-phenyl)-(4-methyl-phenyl)-amin (67%) neben 4-Methyi-N-(3-methyl-benzyl)-anilin (7,5%) und 4-Methyl-anilin (5%) erhalt, aus l-Azido-4-methyl-benzol und Mesitylen jedoch (4- (Methyl-phenyl)-(2,4,6-trime-thyl-phenyl)-amin (55%) neben nur wenig 2,4,6-Trimethyl-anilin (1%)2.

The cleavage products (N,N-dimethylaniline, N-methyl-N-benzyl-aniline and n-pentylbenzene) can be formed by simple displacement reactions on the starting material by the butyllithium. A free-radical cleavage was also considered as a possible, but less likely, alternative.

In guter Ausbeute bildet N-Nitroso-N-benzyl-anilin mit Natriumdithionit in alkalischer Losung 1 -Phenyl-1 -benzyl-hydrazin. Die Reaktion ist jedoch nicht allgemein anwendbar, da z. B. N-Nitroso-diphenyl-amin in unter gleichen Bedingungen unter Spaltung der N-N-Bindung zu Diphenylamin reduziert wird (s.ds. Handb. Bd. X/2, S. 229). 

N-Lithium-N-benzyl-anilin ist in der Lage, substituierte Diarylketone in teilweise guten Ausbeuten in Abhangigkeit vom Substituenten zu den entsprechenden Alkoholen zu reduzieren. So erhalt man z.B. aus 2-Chlor-benzophenon in 70%-iger Ausbeute Phenyl-... 

Antazoline base is prepared by the interaetion of N-benzyl aniline with 2-imidazoline methyl ehloride with the elimination of hydrogen chloride. The base is neutralized with hydrogen chloride to yield the desired antazoline hydrochloride.
