Althongh cocaine occurs naturally in plant material, a number of related, naturally occurring alkaloids based upon the tropane structnre may be isolated from the plant material and subsequently converted into cocaine. These inclnde ecgonine, ecgonine methyl ester and benzoyl ecgonine There are two principle routes by which extraction can be achieved prior to cocaine synthesis. [Pg.99]

Ecgonine like tropine does not occur as such in plants. The partially hydrolyzed cocaine, viz., the benzoyl ecgonine, is a natural plant alkaloid. An ester analogous to cocaine with the radical of cinnamic acid, CeHs—CH = CH—COOH, in place of that of benzoic acid, is a natural alkaloid in Java coca leaves and is known as cinnamyl cocaine. [Pg.895]

Abused drugs and metabolites (includes benzoyl-ecgonine, morphine, heroin, methamphetamine, codeine, amphetamine, cocaine, methadone, benzodiazepines)... [Pg.709]

Toxicity associated with chronic use is not as well described as acute toxicity, but it appears to include cerebral atrophy, cardiomyopathy, and chronic pulmonary disease. Cocaine and its metabolites are most commonly identified in patient urine. An immunoassay directed toward identification of benzoyl-ecgonine will frequently indicate the presence of cocaine and its metabolites for many days after use. The duration of qualitatively detected cocaine and metabolites in urine is probably dose dependent and may be up to 3 weeks in length. Chronic use of cocaine may lead to dependence. [Pg.634]

Several other methods have been proposed for the conversion of ecgonine into cocaine —ecgonine is benzoylated by heating with benzoic anhydride or benzoyl chloride, or by heating the hydrochloride with benzoyl chloride, and the resulting benzoyl ecgonine esterified by... [Pg.129]
