Observatioiial studies Of 105 patients with serologically proven Trypanosoma cruzi infection in the chronic stage of the disease who were given benznidazole 5 mg/kg/ day for 60 days in Barcelona [8 60 had with one or more adverse events and 45 were asymptomatic. There were no life-threatening adverse events, but common adverse events included headache (n = 59), dermatological reactions ( = 53), anorexia (n = A2), articular involvement (n = 38), paresthesia (n = 29), and gastrointestinal disorders (n - 16). [Pg.489]

Other adverse effects include anorexia, chronic headache, fatigues, myalgia, and insomnia. In order to prevent these adverse reactions, and hence improve adherence to benznidazole, the following measures are recommended a low fat and hypoallergenic diet, daily administration, patient education, and treatment for no more than 30 days. In particular, patients should be reassured that the adverse effects that benznidazole causes are reversible and non-life-threatening. [Pg.649]
