Parylene (poly-p-xylylene) n. Generic name for a group of film-forming thermoplastics introduced in 1965 by Union Carbide. The basic member, trade named Parylene N, is a polymer of p-xylylene, which has the structure shown below. Parylenes C and D contain one and two chlorine atoms on the benzene ring, and other types have recently become available.
