His liberalism made him some enemies but because of his stature they were unable to do him much harm. In 1880 the Imperial Academy of Sciences refused to elect Mendeleev to membership, electing instead Friedrich Beilstein, a German professor at the Imperial Technological Institute. But the University of Moscow soon made him an honorary member, possibly in response to the Imperial Academy s action. Mendeleev seems not to have been bothered by the... [Pg.169]

Beilsteins Handbuch der Organischen Chemie evolved from the original two-volume first edition compiled by Friedrich Konrad Beilstein (1838-1906) and published between 1881 and 1883 to a multi-volume behemoth, which, when publication of the printed version was terminated in 1998, spanned the literature of organic chemistry in 503 volumes and contained 440,814 pages. [Pg.13]

The Third Supplement of Beilstein may be the last ever published in book form. Writing on the occasion of the 75-year history of this treatise, its editor, Friedrich Richter, suggests that other forms of publication may be more appropriate in the future (punched cards, etc.), because of time lag in publication and other reasons (20). [Pg.139]

Dissolve /Z-a-tocopherol in anhydrous MeOH (15mL/g) cool to -6° for Ihour, then chill in a Dry-ice/acetone bath crystallisation is induced by scratching with a glass rod. The dl-a-acetate [52225-20-4] (see DL-vitamin E actetate below) is a viscous yellow liquid with m -7°, b 184°/0.01mm, 224°/0.3mm, df 0.953, ng> 1.496. It is used as a standard for Vitamin E activity where the unit of activity is attained with Img of pure d/-a-acetate. Since Hoffmann was in Heideiberg for only one semester before graduating and taking a position in private industry, we can place this testimony in the summer of 1856. Besides Kekule and Hoffmann, the circle referred to included Erlenmeyer, Baeyer, Lothar Meyer, Ludwig Carius, the Swiss Hans Landolt, the Austrians Adolf Lieben and Leopold von Pebal, the German-Russian Friedrich Beilstein, the Russian Leon Shish-kov, the American Frank Storer, and the Italians Angelo Pavesi and Ag-ostino Frapolli (Frapolli, Pebal, and Erlenmeyer were all three to five years older than Kekule Lieben, Beilstein, and Baeyer, several years younger). [Pg.382]

The book under review here [Lehrbuch der organhchen Chemie, vol. 1] distinguishes itself in its thematic intent from all other textbooks of organic chemistry. It is intended neither as an elementary primer nor as a detailed handbook. Rather, it is designed to give special consideration to the speculative part of the science. .. We can consider it as a kind of barometer of the science, from which we can read off its current height. Friedrich beilstein ... [Pg.403]

Meanwhile, chemists of reputation continued to flock to the society before the end of December 1858, Louis Pasteur, Henri Sainte-Claire Deville, Friedrich Beilstein, Auguste Cahours and Louis Troost all became members, and the total membership reached 101. At the last meeting of 1858, Girard announced that some members of the society wished to expand its goals and activities eonsiderably others, such as Arnaudon, preferred to maintain the limited functions consistent with the origins of the group. Put to a vote, 36 of the 52 members present favoured allowing the society to expand the circle of its... [Pg.94]

Probably the most distinguished assembly of chemists in the history of science (8) could be found at the First International Chemical Congress which was held in Karsruhe in the Kingdom of Baden in 1860. Aside from Kekule, Liebig, Wohler, Bunsen and von Baeyer, there were also present Jean Baptiste Dumas, Hermann Kopp, Adolph Kolbe, Sir Edward Frankland, Dmitri Mendeleev, Friedrich Beilstein, Lothar Meyer and Charles Friedel, all of them "academically related." It was at this meeting that Stanislao Cannizzaro, a young Italian chemist who was working in Sardinia, and a former assistant of Michel Chevreul in Paris, burst in an... [Pg.27]

Between 1881 and 1883, Friedrich K. Beilstein published Beilstein Handbuch der Organischen Chemie, which was continued in five Supplementary Series (Erganzungswerke). The Beilstein Collection is structured as follows ... [Pg.245]
