John Beddoes began to explore the possibility. Before any substantial steps were taken, however, the Conservatives were defeated in Parliament, and Canadian voters replaced them with a Liberal government that was not interested in privatization.

John Beddoes was on hand to welcome Marc Lalonde to Kanata, but by the time the first Therae 25 was delivered, RCC had a new chief executive. Beddoes left the company in September 1982, and Paul O Neill, executive vice-president and chief financial officer of AECL, assumed responsibility for RCC until a replacement could be found. In December, William Hatton was appointed to the position. A chartered accountant by training, he had previously been head of AECL s heavy-water operations.
