Bearings thrust type

The bearings used in axial compressors are the same journal and thrust type used in the centrifugal compressor. Refer to Chapter 5 for a complete description of these bearings. 

Figure 11.1.1 shows the results of rolling life testing, in which a thrust type bearing tester was used to evaluate the applicability of various types of ceramics materials for bearings [5]. Life is indicated in the figure as that point in time when damage occurred on the ceramic flat plate as test load was increased each... 

Thrust-Bearing Power Loss The power consumed by various thrust bearing types is an important consideration in any system. Power losses must be accurately predicted so that turbine efficiency can be computed and the oil supply system properly designed. 

Figure 12-61 also illustrates three basic types of trunnion rollbearing assemblies. Antifriction pihow blocks are the most common on modern diyers however, when the dryer load requires larger than a 12.7- to 15.2-cm-diameter bearing on the trunnion shaft, the dead-shaft antifriction bearing is substituted. This represents a considerable cost saving compared with the larger pillow blocks. They are completely sealed and continuously bathed in lubricant. Pillow-block bushings are less often used. The thrust washers are difficult to seal against dust, and they draw more power. Thrust roll mountings are depicted also in Fig. 12-61. These are usually dead-shaft.

Rotor Seals To balance the thrust on the rotor, usually there are one or two labyrinth-type seals on the rotor. These seals often are damaged if there is dust in the incoming fluid or gas, and wear on the backside seal causes serious upsets in thrust-bearing loads. Provisions are available for coUecting and disposing of the dust which tends to accumulate in the seal so as to protect the seal from serious erosion.

Speed is not limited by a surface speed as in the hydrodynamic bearing. Unfortunately, however, the stresses in the thrust collar pose one limit and the other is caused by need for an auxiliary bearing, which does have a limitation based on the type of bearing being used. 

Often, two or more types of sensors may be used in conjunction with each other to give more visibility to what is going on. Monitoring of a turbine generator is a good example. Information may be collected about shaft thrust, eccentricity, rpm, bearing wear, gearbox wear, and othens for maintenance and protection analysis.
