Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) was first produced commercially under the brand name Aspirin by Frederick Bayer and Company in 1897. The word "aspirin" comes from "a," for acetyl, and "spir," for spirea. Spirea is a genus of plants that is another natural source of salicylic acid. 

Then, in 1874, Frederick Pierce and his team at St Mary s Hospital in London made a derivative, diacetylmorphine, which proved to be more powerful. The German company Bayer eventually made and marketed this drug as Heroin . It was soon found to be addictive, much more so than morphine, and its use was prohibited in many countries.
