Batteries for Countering Improvised Explosive Devices

1 History of Property Damage and Bodily Injury to Soldiers [Pg.272]

2 Anti-IED Techniques to Minimize Property Damage and Injury to Soldiers [Pg.272]

Quasi-portable anti-IED equipment has been designed and developed for soldiers to detect and diffuse roadside lEDs. According to military experts, electronic warfare, of which the C-IED mission must be considered a part, is now viewed as a core competency by the Army. Mobile anti-IED equipment carrying high-power lasers and dismounted or portable anti-IED systems have been deployed on hazardous roads and agricultural alleys to detect and destroy lEDs implanted by the insurgents. [Pg.273]

3 Battery Performance Requirements for Dismounted Anti-IED Systems [Pg.273]

Brief trade-off studies performed by the author on the battery performance requirements indicate that the fixed-site anti-IED system has no strict weight and size requirements for the battery because portability is not a critical requirement for the rechargeable battery. For the mounted anti-IED system, moderate weight and size requirements for the battery are desirable. Dismounted anti-IED equipment, however, has strict weight, size, and power output requirements for the battery. The author has limited this discussion only to the dismounted anti-IED system, because this equipment is widely carried by soldiers on their backs. Therefore, portability is of paramount importance. [Pg.273]
