Basic Index

The Basic Index contains every name segment of the CA Index Names and of every synonym. Basic Index searching inevitably requires the use of proximity operators. 

STN will automatically insert a WORD operator (W) between the search terms when no operator is given. This operator will fix the order of the terms and their distance from each other. A W with nothing added will search for adjacent terms (Sects. 6.2.3.S and 8.2). 

The words decanedioic and acid must be adjacent. Additionally, the word ethylhexyl must be part of the same chemical name. Search statements may become very long, as shown in the following example for 1,2,7,8 tetrachloro-dibenzo-para-dioxin  

In many cases, the order of the search terms will be known, while the distance within is not. The (XW) or (XA) operator are the appropriate tools in this instance. The X does not stand for a number.

Most simply, basicity can be expressed as the Ca0 Si02 ratio or by the more complete basicity index as shown in Table 5.2. The abstract text for each document averages about 150 words and is more indicative than informative of document content. However, when convenient, results and data are included. Words in the abstract and title are part of the Basic Index and are searchable using free text searching techniques. Because each sentence in the abstract is a unit, proximity searching can be used for more specific retrieval during free text searching. 

Before starting a query you should know details about the file structure. All terms in a database are indexed. Distinction is made between Basic Index and Additional Index, In the Basic Index you will usually find all relevant terms from the fields - title, decriptors (keywords) and abstracts. The Additional Index contains the fields - authors names, inventors, patent assignees, source. 

When searching for a substance with a specific formula and, additionally, for all other multicomponent systems, containing this substance as well, the molecular formula is to be searched in the Basic Index ... 

In the Basic Index the formula cannot be entered with spaces. The field Number of Components (NC) allows one to restrict their number ... 

Searching for this molecular formula in the Basic Index will retrieve all monomers, containing this component as well as the polymers ... 

Any term existing in these fields may be searched without field qualification, except for the so-called stopwords, which are not searchable straightaway. On the one hand, they would strongly inflate the index, on the other, they are used by the retrieval language (AND, OR, NOT). The following words are not accepted in the CA Basic Index ... 

Other databases contain other stopword lists. The combining of search terms in the Basic Index is done through the Boolean operators AND, OR, NOT and proximity operators W, A, S, L and P (Sect. 6.2.3.5). 

A search in the Basic Index will not include searching the text of the abstract. The suffix lA added to the search term will help to carry out the search not only in the title, index terms and keywords but also in the abstract field ... 

Registry Numbers may be taken over from the Registry File (Sect. 7.3.1) or searched directly. As Registry Numbers are documented in the Basic Index, field qualifiers are not demanded for them. 

When the Registry Numbers of polymers are retrieved in the Registry File using the field Polymer Class Term (PCT) (Sect. 7.1.4.3), a supplementary Basic Index and abstract (search field lA) search should be conducted (Fig. 121).
