In the present chapter we shall start from the results obtained in Chapter 3 and treat the Stark effect of a hydrogenic atom or ion with the use of the phase-integral approximation generated from an unspecified base function developed by the present authors and briefly described in Chapter 4 of this book. Phase-integral formulas for profiles, energies and half-widths of Stark levels are obtained. The profile has a Lorentzian shape when the level is narrow but a non-Lorentzian shape when the level is broad. A formula for the half-width is derived on the assumption that the level is not too broad. 

Chronic studies showed no histological changes in the testes or ovaries of male and female Wistar rats fed a diet containing unspecified levels of aluminum phosphide/ammonium carbamate for 24 months (Hackenberg 1972), or in B6C3F1 mice that ingested 979 mg Al/kg/day as dietary aluminum potassium sulfate for 20 months (Oneida et al. 1994). The doses in the latter study do not include aluminum in the base diet. Neither mouse study assessed reproductive function.. 

Here, percent base saturation is simply the percentage of total cation exchange capacity (CEC) that is balanced by the base cations, and j x) symbolizes an unspecified function of some variable x. It is this equation that is in part the basis for the importance given historically to percent base saturation in soil. In actual fact, the relationship between pH and percent base saturation in soils, while statistically significant, is weak. As a result, percent base saturation and pH are unreliable predictors of one another, although there is clearly a tendency for soils with low pH to have low percent base saturation.
