Basal cell carcinoma pigmented

The diagnosis of melanoma is complicated by a number of pigmented moles (melanocytic nevi) and nonmelanocytic lesions that resemble melanoma. Ordinary nevi, found on the skin of white adults, average between 10 and 40 lesions. These lesions are usually absent at birth and increase in number through adult life, and then gradually decline in number. They appear as tiny pinpoint macules and are usually uniform in color, but increase in size to a maximum of 4 to 6 mm. Nonmelanocytic pigmented lesions such as seborrheic keratoses, pigmented basal-cell carcinoma, and vascular lesions can also appear similar to a melanoma lesion. [Pg.2528]

Skin lesions, which emerge gradually over a period of 1-10 years, typically begin with a characteristic pattern of spotted ( raindrop pigmentation on the torso and extremities, followed after several years by the development of hyperkeratotic changes on the palms and soles. Skin lesions may occur after lower doses than those causing neuropathy or anemia. Arsenic-related skin cancer, which includes squamous cell carcinoma, Bowen s disease, and basal cell carcinoma, is characteristically multicentric, and in non-sun-exposed areas. [Pg.117]

Of the 488 former workers examined dermatologically, 115 had abnormal pigmentation and 22 had skin tumors of which 8 were cases of Bowen s disease (Inada et al. 1978). Pigmentation disorders were present in 57 cases of 109 engaged only in the production of mustard and in only 1 of 16 cases engaged only in the production of lewisite. Hyperkeratotic skin lesions such as Bowen s disease, basal cell carcinomas, and hyperkeratotic papular eruptions were present in 14 cases of 109 engaged only in mustard production and in 1 case of 16 engaged only in lewisite production. No abnormalities were observed in 77 for-... [Pg.40]
