The world production of barley was 132 million metric tons in 2003.2 Some of the major barley producing countries are Canada, the United States, France, Spain, Finland, Denmark, Germany, Turkey, China, England and the Russian Federation. Canada is the largest barley producer on the American continent, with production of 13.5 million metric tons, accounting for 10.2% of the total world production.2 In Canada the prairie provinces, Alberta and Saskatchewan, contribute up to 88% of the national barley production.3 The average Canadian yield is about 4 tons/hectare.
