Bagasse, utilization

Wet bagasse is fed to the existing boilers, which is the current method of bagasse utilization in the sugar mills. A portion of the wet bagasse is dried to 10 percent moisture and fed to a fast pyrolysis plant. The char and gas by-products of the pyrolysis process are burned to produce the energy needed for the pyrolysis. Flue gases from the char combustion are sent to the dryer as a heat source. [Pg.834]

Bagasse utilization is of prime interest to the sugar industry. Microbial degradation has been researched for many years. However, in this time of ever increasing fuel costs, bagasse remains the prime fuel in most raw cane sugar factories. In addition, bagasse also is used to make paper board. New process developments have lowered the minimum size of plant to produce paper economically. [Pg.306]

The present utilization of carbohydrates as a feedstock for the chemical industry is modest, when considering their ready availability, low cost and huge potential [92], The bulk of the annually renewable carbohydrate biomass consists of polysaccharides, but their non-food utilization is still modest. The low-molecular-weight carbohydrates, that is, the constituent units of these polysaccharides, are potential raw materials for several commodity chemicals in fact, glucose (available from cornstarch, bagasse, molasses, wood), fructose (inulin), xylose (hemicelluloses) or the disaccharide sucrose (world production 140 Mtons year-1) are inexpensive and available on a scale of several ten thousands. [Pg.316]
