Anaerobic organisms also play a role in osteomyelitis. When anaerobes are grown from cultures, they usually are found in association with other organisms, including aerobic bacteria. The two most common predisposing factors in patients who have anaerobic osteomyelitis are previous fractures and diabetes mellitus. The anaerobic infections in association with diabetes mellitus almost always occur within the feet. Bacteroides fragilis and B. melaninogenicus comprise the majority of anaerobic isolates. [Pg.2122]

Lipopolysaccharides carrying identical O antigens have been extracted from Bacteroides fragilis, B. melaninogenicus, and B. oralis with aqueous phenol or aqueous H edta or trichloroacetic acid. Differences in the proportions of neutral sugars in the extracted materials indicated that other carbohydrate-containing polymers might also be extracted with these solvents. [Pg.275]
